OpenSolaris 2008.11 Release

It looks like the 2008.11 release of OpenSolaris just hit their download page. My plan this week is to install the image on my primary laptop and gauge ease of installation, configuration, driver support, and performance.

According to blog reports, the new features to watch include the bundled ZFS automatic snapshot tools, the install process is now working again on hosts with 512mb of memory, and better support for trusted extensions. It's easier to download packages from remote repositories, and you can even build your own distribution media. GNOME is updated, and there are builds of Firefox 3, Songbird, and other desktop applications available.

If I'm not bogged down by work, I'll have a review article out by Friday.
